Day 3 Kirk Yetholm – Wooler - Lunch On Hills

Yeavering Bell.
On your left Northumberland’s largest hill fort. Covers 13 acres. Outlines of 130 circular huts.
On Northern side Ad Gefrin, the Royal township of C7th Anglo-Saxon Kings of Northumbria where St. Paulinus taught the people for 36 days and then baptised 3000 Northumbrians in 627 in the nearby River Glen.
Memorial plaque on the road from Kirknewton to Wooler, which is where we will reach tonight.

Humbleton Hill
another impressive hill fort. On the northern slopes, site of the battle of Homildon Henry VI part I opens with a report of this battle. Battle fought between English led by Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) and the Scots led by Archibald, Earl of Douglas. On way back from raids in Northumberland, laden with plunder, only to find the English blocking their route home. Forced to make a stand and suffered heavy losses.
